| Accept Yourself as You Are Today |
| |
By Colleen Craig, Certified Pilates
Trainer.
This is an excerpt from Colleen's book Pilates on the Ball.
When I studied ballet I often focused on what I was
not. A voice in my head could not be silenced: I
began too late, I was not as flexible or as skinny as
the other dancers, I mixed up the choreography, my
jumps were without grace, my pirouettes too
unwieldy. I loved the physical sensation of
dancing— the sensual rush of flying through
space— but I poisoned those longings with
constantly comparing myself to others. This hostility
caused a bottomless pit of longings, envies, and
neediness. When I got the wonderful opportunity to
study with a prestigious teacher or attend a special
ballet
school in the summer, anxiety and shame destroyed
the pleasure of these experiences. Dance, which had
started off as a friend, ended up as an enemy that
had this power to make me happy or sad, self-loving
or self-hating.
Stop right now and take an inventory of all the
physical joys that your life now possesses. List them
in your mind or on a piece of paper: your health. your
mobility, the power of being able to walk, to see the
beauty around you. If you have a long-term chronic
condition or some other serious disease that has
affected your nervous system, try to focus on what
mobility you possess and what realistic goals can be
set to nurture your strength, endurance, and
coordination. Don't forget your physical
accomplishments of the past. Your body will
remember where you were before and may get you
back there quicker than you might imagine possible.
Ponder your personal well-being—how good it
feels to be in your skin and not anybody else's. Don't
resent your body for its years of being sedentary, or
fight its tightness or restrictions. Don't despise its
weaknesses, it's pains, bulges, and diseases.
Accept
yourself as you are today!
