In our busy lives it is sometimes difficult
to put wellness on the top of our list. We
have so much to accomplish and not always
enough time or energy to devote to something
new. However, it's important that we focus
on wellness because it makes everything else
we do better, happier and more productive.
Incorporating the dimensions of wellness into
our work, school and home, is the key. This
is true for adults and children alike.
With that in mind, here are some key
Dimensions of Wellness to refresh yourself:
| Physical: |
Being physically active, eating right,
taking care of ourselves |
| Environmental: |
Optimizing our surrounding to stimulate
us in a healthy way |
| Intellectual: |
Stretching and challenging our mind |
| Occupational: |
Seeking satisfaction and enrichment in
one's work life |
| Emotional: |
Being aware of and accepting of one's
feelings |
| Social: |
Striving for harmony, contributing to our
environment/community |
The goal is to find something that will
naturally interweave into your day, yet be
flexible and fun. Question: What if there
was simple tool that could be used by
children and adults in all settings to
enhance this goal of achieving balanced
wellness? Answer: the stability ball used as
chair and for move and stretch breaks during
the day. Using the stability ball as a chair
in your school, work and home environment has
many benefits.
Some of those benefits of Sitting on the
Stability Ball include:
- Improved posture
- "Active sitting" - with little to no
disturbance
- Increased blood flow to all part of the
body, especially the brain
- Improved attention and concentration
- Strengthened core muscle groups (postural
muscles)
- Improved balance and coordination
The ball is custom sized to each individual,
and is adaptable to all ages and fitness
levels. It is also ideal of stretching and
strength training.
We can now connect the Dimension of Wellness
with sitting on the ball. Using four of the
categories above, they are:
Physical:
"Active sitting", fitness integrated into
the classroom/office, move and stretch
breaks, a lifetime of physical activity
Environmental:
A wellness-oriented climate, adaptable
seating (custom-sized), comfort, rejuvenation
Intellectual:
A connection between the body and the brain,
optimal learning, increased time on task
Occupational:
Employee fitness (ball classes at work) that
connects people, fun, comfortable seating in
your work station that improves work
efficiency, role modeling healthy behaviors
for others, the ability to move during the
day and as a result, feel good and positive
about being at work.
Bringing wellness into your life is easier
than you think…even when your time is
limited. Consider replacing your current
home or office chair with a stability ball
and you will be “bouncing into wellness”
before you know it.
