Is the exercise ball a better exercise choice than the balance discs? I am interested in core strengthening and don’t have a lot of space. I was going to use the ball as a chair but wonder if the disc would be just as effective
I get asked this question all the time from individuals just like your self who don’t have a lot of space in their work or home office. And to answer your question, yes, the FitBALL Balance Disc is an effective tool for core strengthening work. The FitBALL Balance Disc is a versatile core stability and balance training tool that easily adjusts to any level. The disc is a great alternative to sitting on the FitBALL because it because mimics the movement and shape of a FitBALL exercise ball. So whether you sit on a FitBALL Balance Disc or a FitBALL, you may experience the following benefits: improved balance, stronger core muscles, better posture, and even reduced risk of back injury. The uneven, dome shaped surface of the disc requires your trunk and core muscles to be used in order to stabilize you in a seated position. In addition, sitting on the disc makes you more aware of your posture during the day. So rather than slouching in your office chair, you will be engaged in “active sitting” that will strengthen your abdominal and low back muscles.
In addition to “active sitting”, the FitBALL Balance Disc can be used to enhance your strength training routine. The Disc can be used in various positions and be inflated or deflated to control the balance challenge. You can even strengthen your ankles, calves, and thighs just by standing on the unstable disc surface. Here are a few balance and core strengthening exercises that can be done using the FitBALL Balance Disc:
1. Stand on one foot for 30-60 seconds to increase balance and stability.
2. Stand on one or two discs while performing upper and lower body exercises such as lateral raises, biceps curls, and abductor/adductor moves.
3. Use multiple discs when performing squats, lunges or push-ups.
4. Sit on the disc to perform abdominal exercises.
An added benefit of the FitBALL Balance Disc is that it is compact and portable; making it a great alternative to the FitBALL when traveling.
For ideas on how to use the FitBALL Balance Disc to enhance your resistance training program, check out The Great Balance and Stability Handbook at www.balldynamics.com. This book includes over 80 variations of balance and stability exercises using three balance tools: the FitBALL Balance Disc, BOSU trainer, and wobble board.
